When it comes to arranging furniture there are many ways one can precede. That does not mean, however, that one can’t make some mistakes. While experts agree that the surest way to create a flawless room is through trial and error, there are a few rules you should keep in mind. England Furniture Reviews how to arrange furniture:

1. Hang Paintings or Mirrors in Relation to the Rest of the Furniture
Paintings or mirrors should ground everything around it. Don’t hang them too high. Typically place them around 24 to 36 inches above a piece of furniture, although that rule vary a bit depending on the height of the artwork or mirror itself.

2. Light Your Room Entirely
Lighting is one of the most essential elements in any space. Spread your light sources around a space and make sure every part of the room gets lit. If, for example, you have a lamp next to your bed, place two more strategically in the room to create a triangle of light.

3. The Coffee Table Should Be Big

For the Love of Trunks

There are nearly endless uses for old leather traveling trunks! They are nostalgic, functional and oh so classy.

If you don’t have an older family member who might very well have one, check out some garage sales, thrift shops, or antique shops. They may not come in perfect condition, but a little TLC will take care of that.

  1. Find a trunk that fits the space you have.
  2. Don’t worry about broken handles, they are easy to replace and sometimes look fine as they are. Remember you’re not traveling with them, just showing them off.
  3. Reject any that have signs of mold. It may not be worth the trouble.
  4. It may take a few tries to find your gem, but shopping for one is half the fun!
  5. Once you find one you love, wipe it down inside and outside with a damp rag.
  6. If you want to deepen the color, you can use furniture polish or stain.
  7. It’s likely to be a bit musty so place a small bowl of bleach on top of a towel on the bottom of the trunk and then close it and let it sit overnight. Make sure no one knocks into it – you don’t want to spill the bleach.
  8. In the morning, dispose of the bowl of bleach and let it air out for the rest of the day.
  9. If the inside needs a new liner, peel off the old and pick up a cool patterned liner that fits your style.
  10. Once it’s clean and ready you can use the trunk as a: coffee table, storage for blankets, pillows, toys, books, firewood… oh, the possibilities are endless!

Lighting is everything! It can make nearly any space look completely different with just a few adjustments.

  • Variety – layer your lighting with table lamps, tall floor lamps as well as overhead lighting for a balanced effect.

  • Try a chandelier or cool lighting fixture above a dining room table to create the right ambiance for your setting.

  • Some rooms can be really tricky to light, like bathrooms, but adding a dimmer switch is a simple and inexpensive way to change the mood with a simple slide of the switch.

  • There are battery-operated string lights available that allow you to light corners, bookshelves and more with a very cool effect and no outlet needed. They can give something like a simple vase a whole new look.

  • A bulb could be the culprit of harsh lighting, so consider a simple change of wattage or bulb type to get that light just right.

Welcome Autumn!

Let everyone know that you welcome the season of Fall with a beautiful, autumn-inspired wreath on your front door.  Simple grapevine wreaths are a simple way to go.  If you desire something more ornate, add leaves, pine cones, corn husks, or berries on your wreath.  Use white pumpkins if you want to add a touch of elegance.

 

Use your Fireplace

Simply using your fireplace during autumn is a wonderful way to add warmth to your room, figuratively and literally! Help to bring in that autumnal feel by adding leaves, pine cones, pumpkins, gourds, or fall-inspired colored candles on your fireplace mantle.  Before lighting your first fire, be sure the chimney has been cleaned and inspected.  Safety first!

 

Blankets Galore

The recently concluded International Furniture Market held in High Point, NC, fulfilled our expectations of optimistic opportunity! England Furniture went armed with two merchandising programs to offer our dealers realistic, affordable avenues for profitable sales.

The first is MetroMix. This is a collection of contemporary styles with a retro feel in size and design. Our theme at market was “The Next Generation” and this assortment of groups clearly fits with the needs and desires of a segment of our population that is now overtaking baby boomers in number. Clean lines, skirtless, plenty of button detail, all atop a simplistic leg treatment is the future of style in metro areas. Did I say affordable?

Leather sales were headed up by the 2010L in both a double reclining sofa group and a sectional treatment. The 300 sleepers were tops in their category with an old favorite, the 1304D chair, leading the accents.

The top five fabrics overall were Grande Linen, Wagga Wagga Otter, Paradigm Silt, Sawyer Cocoa and Jive Granite. The top five leathers were Galveston Vintage, Salvador Black Oak, Galveston Firebrand, Ryder Cognac and Salvador Asphalt.
